Apple iPad New Launch Date: Invite Says Oct. 16, Reports Say ‘iPad Gold’

Move over iPhone 6, here is iPad latest readying for another mega-launch on October 16, 2014 by tech giant Apple as the invite from the company says “It’s been too long,” which means "Gold iPad Air 2" will be unveiled to offset the dwindling demand for iPads in tune with the global tablet market.

Apple may also announce its latest updates to its iMac line, Re/code reports, said ‘9to5Mac’ last week. A Bloomberg report said Apple is planning to launch a ‘gold’ iPad Air 2 with 9.7-inch display at the Oct 16th and sporting a golden coloured rear metal cover, in addition to the standard silver and gray colours already availble.

The launch is expected to boost the dwindling market size for tablets across all the brands including Apple and Samsung. Among other options, Apple is trying to increase sales with the introduction of the much-sought after golden colour device.

Otherwise, 13.2 million iPads were sold in the second quarter of 2014 registering less than 16.3 million units sold in Q1 and still less than 14.6 million iPads sold in Q3 of 2013. Bloomberg said Apple data showed that the iPad saw a negative growth of 9% on units as well as 8% on revenue, year-on-year basis.

The invite for Oct 16, the second event coming closer on the heels of its launch of iPhone 6, is not unusual as it held similar event every year after the launch of the main product of the year. Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook held the iPad Air announcement at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on Oct. 22, 2013 in San Francisco for which similarly toned down invites were sent out.

The big event in each fall is reserved for the release of the new iPhones, which account for 50% of the company’s revenue, but Apple also regularly holds a second event for tablets and computers. Moreover, iPads sale has shrunk by half from 2013 figures. In Q4 of 2013, Apple’s tablet sales peaked to $11.5 billion but in Q2 of 2014, it was able to sell merely $5.8 billion worth iPads, down 8% from 2013.

Another rumor going with the invite is that Apple is currently working on a larger iPad meant for the business market, which will be released in 2015.
