The President has accepted the resignation of Najeeb Jung, as Lt. Governor of National Capital Territory of Delhi and appointed ex-bureaucrat Anil Baijal to be the next Lieutenant Governor of National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office, said a statement from the Home Ministry.
As the CMD of Air India, he was key to negotiations with Taliban hijackers in 1999 when India bowed to their pressure and released some dreaded terrorists. Baijal is also associated with the Vivekananda International Foundation.
The choice of Baijal makes it clear that the Centre is keen on a person who is both political and skillful. It may be an effort to stem the ongoing rancour with AAP CM Arvind Kejriwal, who was in disagreement with Jung right from the beginning.
However, neither the PMO nor the Home Ministry reportedly consulted with Kejriwal about the choice. In case of other states, usually the CM is informed well in advance or consulted before.
