As expected Aamir Khan starrer “PK” crossed the benchmark Rs.300 crore on Sunday, sending the entire PK team into merry-making within 17 days after its release amid controversies and protests and ‘politicking’ too.
The film is unique in the sense it bode farewell to 2014 with a bang and also entered the new year 2015 with a bang and hope for the Bollywood. As was the case with Dhoom 3 in December 2013, so was the release of “PK” amid high hopes and Aamir Khan-starrer never failed to disppoint viewers, especially when there is a big hype ahead of the film.
While the twin role Dhoom 3 was never revealed till the last moment of the film’s release ahead of 2013 Christmas eve, even the theme of PK was kept highly secret that there was natural enthusiasm that had gripped audience before its rlease. The alien theory, though proposed in our columns, it was refuted later by Aamir Khan and director Raj Kumar Hirani.
When guesswork peaked, the film was released with celebrities like Sachin Tendulkar and LK Advani pitching for the film in high esteem. Soon, the film released with a big bang and alike packed the theatres all over the country, reminscing the days of “3 Idiots” release.
While “3 Idiots” box office collections crossed Rs.200 crore, Aamir Khan-starrer “Dhoom 3” collected Rs.265 crore in the domestic market and finally, “PK” has finished the challenge with Rs.300 crore. Now the ballin the court of other two Khans, especially Shahrukh Khan, whose film “Happy New Year” slightly fell short of the target.
Trade watcher Suniel Wadhwa said, “For the third weekend in a row, PK continued to be an unstoppable force at the box office, doing big business over the New year weekend after brisk business during the Christmas weekend.”
Though the box office collections dropped by half in the second week, still the film was able to gross Rs.95 crore compared to Rs.65 crore earned by Dhoom 3, he said.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and co-produced with Vidhu Vinod Chopra in association with Disney’s UTV Motion Pictures, ‘PK’ was released in 4,000 screens across India on December 19. The film stars Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma in key roles, besides Sanjay Dutt in cameo appearance.
