Maintained by 3-member-staff, cuttack Shishu Bhawan or Children’s Home is facing numerous deaths in the past two weeks, as many as 61, forcing the state government to order a probe.
Odisha health minister Atanu S. Nayak said on Wednesday that five workers have been suspended, while local reports said merely 3 members acually are staioned in it.
While state Opposition parties held protests outside state-fundd hospitals, state’s health minister Nayak said, the deaths were due to negligence of the staff.
However, doctors at the child care facility blamed the deaths on insufficient infrastructure and not negligence by staff.
Niranjan Mohanty, a senior official at the hospital, told Reuters that the staff was overburdened, with 50 critically ill in-patient children and another 500 outpatients daily.
Child mortality rate in India is still a concern as figures available for 2013 show that more than one million children died before the age of 5 and 50,000 maternal deaths were recorded.
