‘Businessman’ Review: Violent guns stem the storyline

Mahesh Babu’s Sankranthi gift “Businessman” is unfortunately another ‘Panja’ with the theme made too light to believe which may suit the actor’s fans. It remains on par with the latest mafia-centric movies in terms of violence or supporting gangster characters but nowhere will the audience get bored in the film.

The film opens with Mumbai Police Commissioner (Nazar) revealing to the media that the mafia in town is totally eliminated, while Surya (Mahesh Babu) enters the scene to quickly fill the vacuum and defends the need to build a gang that suits modernization of mafia activities through Surya Exports and Imports.

When he falls in love with Chitra (Kajal Agarwal), the daughter of the police commissioner, the film takes serious romantic twist and the repetition of “Pokiri” scenes come alive in the film but this time there is no twist to say why he was doing all this. Only when Prakash Raj takes the centre-stage, does it dawn upon the viewer why Surya has become a villain or chose the path of violence. Except for the lip-lock, the story runs faster than expected and no one realizes till the end that there was no comedy in the film. Director Jagannath has done an excellent job making the film so gripping and moving throughout.

How Mahesh Babu convinces his role and his activities through his last message in the film that the time has come for everyone to pursue his goal, leaves one wonder whether he was supporting the mafia role or ridiculing them.

Unfortunately, the film is a combination of “Pokiri” and it is Mahesh Babu’s omnipresent role that may prove the film a mild hit, if not a repetition of Dookudu’s success.
