Students up in arms as Sibal scraps IIT-JEE entrance exam from 2013

Human Resources Minister Kapil Sibal has announced the government panel’s decision to scrap all engineering entrance exams from 2013-14 and follow a single entrance exam with a merit list to be followed by all IITs and other engineering colleges in the country.

The system already on anvil for medical entrance from next year, will be implemented for all engineering colleges. But the decision evoked immediate opposition from all IIT students who said they would go on strike and boycott classes from October 14.

On Anil Kakodkar Committee recommendation to hike tuition fee five times in all IITs, the minister said the present fee of rs 50,000 will be maintained but a bond stipulating that the private companies recruiting these engineers will have to deduct the extra amount spent on their education by the government.

Similar to Tax Deduction at source, the remaining amount spent on each student will be paid back to the government from the employed graduates of the IITs.

From the entrance hopping of nearly 150 exams every year, only one exam applies to all. The government will scrap all such exams, including the IIT-JEE and the AIEEE.

The decision was arrived at after a meeting of IIT Council (IIT directors) and officials from the ministry of human resource development (HRD) on Monday, chaired by Union HRD minister Sibal.

“There will be one merit list. Institutes, including the IITs, will have to pick up students from this list,” Sibal said. “The list will be based on Standard 12 marks and the entrance test results. Also, students will be counselled before they choose a course.”

Those from the SC/ST and OBC categories and students going for higher education or joining the faculty of the IITs will be exempted from the payment of the fee.

“At present, the fees are nominal because of government subsidy,” he said. “The actual cost works out to nearly Rs6-8 lakh per student. Students can surely pay back this amount in easy instalments, considering the plush jobs they land with once they get their degrees.”

The degrees will be in a DMAT format with the amount each student has to pay the government and the future employers will have to deduct the amount and pay the government directly, he said.

The decision will be sent to all state governments for approval, Sibal said.

They have surfaced on Facebook as iitians.org and said on the social networking site that the quality of IITs would be affected under the new admission policy.

“We are requesting not just the IITs, but also students of classes 11 and 12 from other colleges, professors and teachers to join our protest,” said an IIT student associated with the group.

    KAPIL SIR,
As parents, we suppport you fully. To all your critics you please show the statistics of how many IITians are opting for IIMs and changing their line. Isn’t that a BRAIN DRAIN and SOlid loss to real engineering passioned students.thousands of engineering seats from private colleges are lying vacant for want of takers.a national waste. India needs lots of masons, carpenters, electricians, hardware technicians, automobile engineers and environmental friendly citizens.we need to be self reliant in food and other basic needs of dignified living.
value based education is the need of the hour.our culture and art and heritage are to be saved.
we need young brains who can solve the energy problems of our huge population, who can come out of bumper yield ideas for our farmers, water conservation specialists, low cost and safe housing providers, nutrition and medical care providers for our public.we need visionaries and humanitarians.
Let every student is made to study mathematics and biology till class XII.Even an engineering student need to have some basic knowledge of environment and human biology – he shall be a responsible citizen, a good husband in his future.

When you are planning to bring sea changes in our education system, GO AHEAD . Then he/she can decide the future course of study as per his/her passion and suitability. there should be only two streams – SCIENCE STREAM AND ARTS STREAM. ALL SCIENCE STUDENTS TO GIVE BOTH BIOLOGY AND ENGINEERING ENTRANCE TESTS. This new proposed system of single merit and entrance exam will improve the overall education system in India and may be more creative & innovative students get admission in IITs, rather than now mediocore , who just go to Coaching institutes and bunk up their 11th and 12th stds.

Many students just get boggy admission in 11th / 12th Std in a school, then remain at KOTA / JAIPUR for coaching for coaching .

This coaching system is just eating out the brain of India and spoiling whole of INdia’s new technical generation.

    Dear Sir,
Being a student of class 11, I strongly oppose this idea because
1)Different boards have different question & evaluation patterns. How is it possible to evaluate and equalize the marks of students giving exams to different questions?
    2) The standard of questions in boards is completely different from the IITs. How can this single examinaton and evaluation through board examinations possibly help to maintain that standard?
    3) This is extremely helpful for those who prefer rote learning.
    Please sir,kindly reconsider your decision.

Ha!, What a ridiculous idea. How the board markings of different boards will have equalisation. Some of the state borads are not at all strict and some are very strict. Moreover, courses are different and question patterns are different. How is the equalisation possible?

The politicians are playing with the future of the students.

Marking system/ examination pattern for class 12th exam all over country is not same so considering class 12 exams for iit entrance does not make any sense. First of all it should be ensured that all the student should be given equal oppurtinity/ platorm for 12th exam itself before going for this experiment.

YES, YOU ARE RIGHT RAGHAV. I TOO APPRECIATE THIS NEW SYSTEM FOR SELECTION.
COZ IN EVERY STATE BOARD 11th AND 12th STUDIES ARE SAME. AND 12th BOARD MARKS WOULD HELP A LOT, COZ BOTH POOR AND RICH CAN AFFORD NORAML TUTION CLASSES, NOT THOSE IIT COACHING. AND EVERY STUDENT WOULD GET A FAIR CHANCE OF SCORING IN THE 12th BOARD. SO THIS IIT INSTITUTE CAN SELECT ON MERIT BASIS.

  14. RAGHAV

    October 15, 2011 at 11:34 pm

IF ANY BODY IS INTELLIGENT IT HARDLY MATTERS WHAT TYPE OF ENTRANCE EXAMINATION .
IN EXISTING SYSTEM CANDIDATES HAVE TO PREPAIR SEPARATELY FOR IIT AND 12TH BOARD EXAMINATION.
FEE OF STANDARD COACHING INSTITUTE FOR IITS IS NOT AFFORDABLE BY ALLS
DOUBT OF MALE PRACTICE THAT CAN DONE IN ANY EXAMINATION
THEREFORE THE NEW PATTERN OF IIT EXAMINATION WILL TAKE CARE ALL THE ABOVE.
STUDENTS OF IITS HAS NOT TAKEN ALL THE THEKAS FOR PATTERN OF EXAMINATION .THEY SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON THEIR STUDY CARRIER.

This is really not a logical decision.
How can he think like this.
And why are they increasing unemployment for Teachers.
Dont he has any idea about the number of coaching institutes running in each city or state.
Please dont do this even this is not good for studnts. Each exam has different level let it be there only….

my thought about kapil sibal is completely changed now. he should be atleast some logical before making any decisions. IIT is the only institute which produces quality engineers and it is becos it JEE is the only exam which requires you to be strong in concepts and understanding of the subject. this new pattern is lacking those qualities and considering 12th marks that is one of the stupid things u can ever think of. most of the states like tamilnadu and andhra will be getting the benefit out of it, as u can score great mark in those state exams while bihar board students will again deprived of it. so please make a decision which make any sense.it is about the future of youth and country u can not experiment on it.

    October 12, 2011 at 10:21 pm

The idea of kapil sabil is right, but the way it is implemented is not good. It should have been 50% board marks and the rest must be evaluated from iitjee, so that it will be even tougher and students wil realize the importance of boards as well. Anyways let us hope for a better India.

    October 12, 2011 at 9:32 pm

And yes, every point of this idea is disgusting. There aren’t any real practical advantages to this scheme.
Narayan Murthy’s wish to see a good set of capable engineers, is gonna be a dream this way.
Besides, all boards are different. It will create inter-state crisis. India has enough problems to handle, I don’t think debating about different state’s board ideas is something India should waste time with. Some boards are lenient, others are strict. That is going to create new divides, new crisis.

    October 12, 2011 at 9:31 pm

its totally a waste decision taken by Mr Kapil sibbal to take the 12th board marks for IIT like institutions. according to my opinion…. india is a country of villages where more than 60% of the students belong to villages and we all know how much the students from villages score marks in 12th board…. in general most of the toppers belong to some hi-fi schools having typically high fees…. so this all decision will become a barrier against these students,..

  20. Sumita

    October 12, 2011 at 9:26 pm

You’re inviting the quality v/s quantity crisis again. This system won’t solve any problems, it will create more. And no, poor student won’t benefit, as privileged ones will still do the coaching for the newly introduced exam. So its a pointless deal. And board marks, you gotta be kidding! You wanna make more useless engineers, just to tackle privatisation? Really? Rote-learners are gonna get the opportunity to boast their uselessness again. IITJEE and AIEEE are exams which pick the genuinely capable people, and separate them from parrots, IITJEE is an ASSET to Indian Education system, and it is high time you realized that!

    i oppose mr. sibal.
its gonna spoil whole system of JEE.many intelligent students would lost their chances due to this.and every entrance exam has its own level.how it can be combined???????
    totally disgusting idea………………………

proper theory based applications can not be judged in terms of aptitude test.
In prev. years we found students with very good iit ranks but they were not their corresponding board toppers.
So its a request to mr. Sibal , try to impliment something logical for the entrance test of India’s best technological institute or let the present system stay there

its great…after a long time we heard a good news,it is helpfull for those student who can not effort coaching fee forJEE.poor but inteligent students got selected in IITs beacouse of this great decision.
i defenetly sure that a large group of student would like it..we support kapil sir

Kapil is really abstract, intelligent thinker and innovative. Like the demat form of degree with outstanding amount etc. But the modification in IIT entrance….
It gives me a feeling that I need to revise my opinion about Kapil Sibbal.
By the way, I am a state engg pass out engineer.
Personally, I am fascinated by the level of IIT entrance exam toughness and I really do not understand, how a parrot student or even a student with access to leaked out paper can compete this exam?
It really requires an unparalled intelligence, understanding of bassic concepts and a shear hard work to get success in this exam.
Tampering with the current pattern would do no good in real terms. If Kapil wants to add some weightage of sincerity shown in 12th exams, there can be other avenues in which it can be done.

let the students fight at the same platform every state board has its own pattern of giving marks if iit-jee is dropped iit won’t get that talent which it is getting from the last years u r right gaurav my bother don’t let the parrot come in iits

  27. MANOJ GUPTA

    October 11, 2011 at 10:30 pm

With 12 th class marks there is no scope for its improvement. The coaching institute will start teaching 12th std topics. Coaching will still be there.

  28. Gaurav

    October 11, 2011 at 8:23 am

If 12th marks are used in merit list i sure 10% students who are intelligent will not selected and 10% parrot type students will selected. Hence india lose 10% engineers per year. So dont add the 12th marks please

i oppose Mr. sibal’s decision for these reasons.

[i] one of my friend’s daughter is doing schooling from Bihar
without attaining any class in class 12th and getting 98% marks
that too in 12th board, how———-
[ii] many had left their present jobs to become question paper
    mafia for 12th board.
[iii] all chamchas will open their colleges and other shortcut bars
for 100% admission in iit colleges by paying only simple 5 lacs
    and 10 lacs.
[iv] bansal classes , fitjee classes and others will still exist.
    suggestions
12th board and other boards’ examinations should directly
    be controlled by IITs ———
