Indonesia to offer microcredit to its migrant labourers in Malaysia

Microfinance Monitor, May 19, 2010: Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the Indonesian government will provide microfinance support under the Micro-Credit Support program (KUR) to Indonesian workers (TKI) in Malaysia, said a report by TEMPO Interactive.

“We will provide them KUR so they have initial capital,” he said in a press conference in JW Marriott Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, last Tuesday, the report said. It will help improve workers’ safety in Malaysia, he said.

Apart from this, he said the Indonesian government will sign a pact with Kuala Lampur to enhance workers’ rights and welfare like one day holiday week, possess their passports with themselves, getting pay as per the contract.

He also said the Malaysian government has promised to resolve any legal cases against Indonesian workers in Malaysia.
