Alia Bhatt-Arjun Kapoor-starrer 2 States continued to lead at the box office with the weekend collections reaching Rs. 38 crore in the first three days.
Directed by debutant Abhishek Varman, he film has story from Chetan Bhagat’s novel ‘2 States’ and has an excellent middle class flavour in terms of marriage, cultural differences and above-all, the masala ingredient in a typical ‘Chennai Express’ released by SRK last year.
The film ‘2 States’ collected Rs. 12.42 crore on Friday, followed by Rs 12.13 crore on Saturday but slightly increased to Rs. 13. 51 crore on Sunday, making a total of Rs. 38.06 crore over the first weekend.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh was upbeat on box office collections of the film. He tweeted on Monday: "#2States has a FANTABULOUS weekend. Fri Rs 12.42 cr, Sat 12.13 cr, Sun 13.51 cr. Total: Rs 38.06 cr nett. SUPER HIT."
Since it was a semi-autobiographical novel by Chetan Bhagat, the credit goes to the screen adaptations of his earlier books ‘Kai Po Che’ and ‘3 Idiots’ (a "loose" adaptation of ‘Five Point Someone’) and a good adaptation skill proved the secret behind his filmy success.
On its opneing day box office, it was ranked third biggest Bollywood opener in 2014 after Salman Khan’s Jai Ho (Rs 17 crore) and Ranveer Singh-Priyanka Chopra-Arjun Kapoor-starrer Gunday (Rs 16.12 crore).
Alia Bhatt plays Ananya Swaminathan, a Tamillian Brahmin and Arjun Kapoor is a Punjabi.
